Cooperative Bank New Zealand is the only country’s bank owned by its members. The bank currently has more than 135,000 customers in New Zealand.
Originally founded in 1928 as a Public Service Investment Society (lending money to public servants), it doesn’t make it one of New Zealand’s oldest banks, but it does make it one of the most popular. Officially, the organisation was registered as a bank in October 2011.
The sole purpose of the bank is that it was to be owned by its own customers if that makes sense. The vision is to create prosperity for the customers, and themselves. For example, in July 2014, the bank ended up with a surplus of profit coming to $1.3 million. This amount was wholly returned to its customers who received a rebate between $7 and $100.
It’s had headquarters based in Wellington and currently employs around 560 people.
The bank provides a wide range of banking and financial services through a network of 34 branches across New Zealand and ATM network of Westpac including:
- Transaction accounts
- Savings accounts
- Personal loans
- Investment services
- Internet, mobile, TXT and phone banking
- Insurance
